A parent reflects on First Presbyterian Preschool...
Where Everybody Knows Your Name
Since school is getting back into full swing the Staff at the Preschool and the Preschool Board thought it might be a good opportunity to let the congregation have some personal insight into the preschool. My journey at First Presbyterian Preschool began 5 years ago. It was a whirlwind beginning and I remember thinking after the first few days… Wow – everyone knows our name! I had come from a very "corporate" environment and this was a whole different ball game and I knew it was where we belonged. From day one the preschool was personal, quaint and safe. Immediately I felt like God was giving us a big hug every time we walked through the doors.
I recently asked my boys what they liked about our preschool – both, without hesitation, said snack and lunch (not surprisingly). The amazing thing was that even my 3 year old, who was only in his fist session, knew most of the teachers names – whether they were his teacher or not. My youngest loves the "ice cream train" which is a common game they play with the dreaded pea gravel and the train slide. My oldest just started kindergarten at the "big school" down the road and misses his room and fondly remembers "lady bugs and butterflies coming to life". I can't believe the songs, music, and Spanish they have learned. I have come in late to find Rev. Bob Crilley sitting cross-legged on the floor, in front of the kitchen, 20 kids huddled around listening intently to his teachings and the crazy hamster chewing on the cage behind him. Jodi with her loving voice peeking into every classroom volunteering to keep each child forever as her own. I have mentioned to several kindergarten teachers that we attend First Presbyterian Preschool and most know of the school and think highly of all "graduates".
My whole family has "grown up" in the walls of the preschool – we have laughed hard and played harder – and everyone one of us feels the preschool and the church is "home". I recently spoke with one of the founders of the school whose grandchildren are now attending; she had such pride and conviction about the preschool that I couldn't help but feel proud and privileged to be a part of a legacy to our growing congregation.
I'd like to personally thank everyone who has been involved in First Presbyterian Preschool, even in the smallest way. Because even though it is the smallest building on our campus with the smallest of people in it – I believe it makes the biggest impact on our world. God bless you all and thank you for your support!
Sincerely – Kelly Sickman and Family and First Presbyterian Preschool.
