Special Offerings

Birthday Offering

Started in 1922, the women of PCUS were asked to give one penny for each year of their lives. This money is received in the spring as a special offering. The money is eventually sent to PW-PCUSA to use for worldwide missions emphasizing women and children. The offering funds up to five projects which are not included in ongoing General Assembly mission support, such as agricultural development, child care, community organization, criminal justice, drug counseling, economic justice, elderly care, employment training, homelessness, literacy, violence and women’s concerns. Two projects in 2008 are The Presbyterian Church of the Congo and Lakeview Presbyterian Church Weekday School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Thank Offering

Started in 1888, the women of UPC were asked to thank God by giving above their normal pledge. This money is received in the fall as a special offering. The money is eventually sent to the PW-PCUSA to use for worldwide medical missions and hospitals and other grants. The offering funds projects such as agricultural development, child care, community organization, criminal justice, drug counseling, economic justice, elderly care, employment training, homelessness, literacy, violence and women’s concerns. At least 40 percent of this offering supports health ministries throughout the world. The remaining 60 percent of the funds are used for new creative ideas for mission. In 2007, 16 grants in the US and 33 international grants totaled $1 million.
